Edgewater East Apartment Complex - July 26, 2011 - 2nd Alarm

Firefighters responded to a deck fire in the Edgewater East apartment complex late Tuesday night and were able to stop the spread of the fire. "Upon arrival, the second floor deck was fully involved with extension to the eaves,'' said Fire Chief Al Sico. He said firefighters stretched two lines to the building to contain the flames.

Firefighters got the call at 11:14 p.m. at Apartment 101 B at 81 Avenel Boulevard, Sico said. The chief said firefighters from Truck 6 climbed a ladder to the roof and cut it open to stop the spread of the fire. He said eight apartments were evacuated as a precaution, but the occupants of the apartment where the fire happened could not return to their building. No one was injured at the fire, the chief said.

The Deal Fire Department served as backup at Long Branch fire headquarters. The Fort Monmouth and Oceanport fire departments were upon to act as a Rapid Intervention Team. Sico said the Sea Bright Fire Department responded with an extra ladder truck because Long Branch's ladder truck is being repaired. The West Long Branch Fire Department was also called to the scene.

Firefighters who are part of the Rapid Intervention Team are called to fires to standby in case a firefighter needs to be rescued. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters remained on the scene until 12:26 a.m., Sico said.
