70 North Bath Avenue
December 19, 2011 - One firefighter was injured as a two-alarm fire ripped through the third floor of a home on North Bath Avenue Monday morning. Firefigher Anthony Tomaine, who passed out on the third floor of 70 Bath Ave., will be kept overnight for observation at Monmouth Medical Center, according to city Fire Chief Al Sico.

At 6:22 a.m., firefighters were called to the scene, in the first block of North Bath Avenue, where fire destroyed the interior of the top floor of the home, according to Sico. It was extinguished within an hour. “A lot of credit goes to the first-in crew who really made a great stop. The fire was rolling across the top of the stairs on the third floor when I got to the second floor,’’ Sico said.
“From the bottom of the third-floor stairs, I knew the fire could easily get out of control. But the four firefighters kept pushing and asking for more hose pushed up to them,’’ he said. “They did not give in and soon made the landing and into the fire rooms. Through the thick smoke they went to extinguish the fire,’’ he said.

A small triangular hole in the roof and two broken windows were the only damage that could be seen from the street Monday morning. “We had to open the roof,” Sico explained. Sico said Tomaine was “resting comfortably” on Monday night.
The cause of the fire has not be determined, but may have been electrical, Sico said. “I am very proud of our firefighters and this is another example of their commitment to the citizens of Long Branch,’’ Sico said.
An investigator from the Long Branch Fire Marshal's Office was
injured while inspecting a fire that burned through the third floor
of a North Bath Avenue home on Monday morning.
Long Branch Fire Marshal Kevin J. Hayes, Sr., said the investigator "suffered an episode," after entering the home. Hayes said the fire did not have anything to do with his episode.
The investigator, who Hayes declined to identify, was taken by ambulance to Monmouth Medical Center. "He is doing OK, but will spend the night in the hospital," Hayes said Monday afternoon.
The two-alarm fire was reported around 6:20 a.m., and all occupants of the home were out approximately 10 minutes later, and could be seen on the street near the home. Hayes said none of the occupants were injured. The bulk of the fire appeared to be extinguished by 6:40 a.m., but black smoke was still coming from the front and side windows of the third floor. Hayes said the fire was contained to an attic storage area of the multi-family home.

Hayes said the fire is still being investigated but that it was "possibly caused by an electrical malfunction." The Long Branch Police closed off North Bath Avenue from Second Avenue to Ocean Boulevard to extinguish the blaze, but the street was reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
