LONG BRANCH -- Three people were injured today afternoon when a space heater started a three-alarm fire in an Ocean Avenue building, authorities said. The fire occurred just after noon on the third floor of the Ocean Cove Condominium, said Long Branch Fire Marshal Kevin J. Hayes Sr. A space heater used earlier in the day was placed in a closet next to blankets, which ignited and started the fire. Emergency crews used a rescue basket and a ladder to remove an unidentified occupant from the apartment, who was treated for smoke inhalation. Two unidentified housekeepers in the apartment suffered minor burns to their hands while trying to extinguish the fire, Hayes said. One was treated at the scene, while another was taken to Monmouth Medical Center. The fire has been ruled an accident, Hayes said.

Firefighters rescued an elderly couple from their burning condominium in a high-rise complex on Ocean Avenue early Sunday afternoon. At least six fire companies responded to the three-alarm blaze, which started around noon at the Ocean Cove condo complex. The fire was brought under control in roughly 20 minutes. Officials said it was ruled accidental and was caused by an electric space heater placed in a closet in the front foyer of the apartment."Other combustibles were placed near it, and it was still warm enough to ignite the combustibles," city Fire Marshal Kevin J. Hayes Sr. said. Firemen used a hook and ladder truck to reach the third-story unit at 717 Ocean Ave."The woman was actually rescued from the balcony of the third floor of this high-rise building," Hayes said. Hayes said the woman, Tilda Husney, 85, was taken out in a safety basket down the aerial ladder and transported to Monmouth Medical Center here, where she was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Her husband, Kenneth, escaped from the apartment and did not require medical treatment, Hayes said. In addition, Hayes said two housekeepers were in the condo when the blaze started. One was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, treated for minor burns on her hands and released."She had tried to extinguish the fire by pouring pots of water into the closet," Hayes said. Hayes said the condo incurred heavy smoke and fire damage. The fire, while confined to the one unit, generated plumes of black smoke."There was a lot of smoke through the whole building," said Al Sico, second assistant chief of Long Branch Fire Department."We don't evacuate the building," Sico said. "Normally what we do is defend in place — everybody stays in their own unit and keeps their door shut, and then they're safe. Sico said firemen could feel the fire on the other side when they approached the unit."They had a hard time. There was a lot of fire when they opened the door, " Sico said. "The fire was all behind the front door. When they started to force it on the bottom of the door, it just caved in."But firemen were able to extinguish the blaze quickly. "They went in with the big lines and knocked it down quickly," Sico said. None of the fire companies reported any injuries to firefighters, Hayes said. "Deal, West Long Branch, Monmouth Beach and Oceanport, as well as the Fort Monmouth fire department, were among the companies that came in," Hayes said. Also responding to the blaze were MONOC paramedics, Elberon EMS and the Deal First Aid Squad.
